What Is A Narcissist And How Do You Avoid Hiring Them?

How do you create a safe environment for your team members to flourish?

There are several things you could do, but today I'd like to shine a light on what you ๐— ๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—ง ๐—”๐—ฉ๐—ข๐—œ๐—— instead.

For the well-being of your team, it is crucial to avoid employing narcissists in leadership positions โ€“ the negative impact of their disturbed personality traits on the team member's professional and personal life ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด-๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—บ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒs. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Unfortunately (and not by coincidence), narcissists are frequently found at the top of corporations, especially in finance, banking, and law. This can be avoided by paying extra attention during the interview process.

How to ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜ during an interview: ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿ‘‰ Inquire about their ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐˜€, and pay attention to their explanation of responsibility and blame (they cannot recognise their own failures and cannot let others shine).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Request that they ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„ (they resist with all their strength as they perceive it as a personal threat to their house of cards and rarely change their mind about something).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pay attention to any patterns in ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ (they rarely have good words for others as they cannot share the limelight).

To succeed at this, you must hone your "๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜€" (that is using your intuition, noticing the fluctuation of energy - yours and theirs, listening for words but also for silence) and be present; narcissists are masters at deceiving people by being charming and likeable (a trait all of them share). 

๐Ÿ‘ˆOn the other hand, remember that narcissists ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ก'๐—ง ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ but simply people with (often) hidden traumas ๐Ÿ˜ž and their impossibility to feel other people's emotions it's not their fault. They shouldn't be demonised, but they mustn't be given the power to make other team members feel unsafe at work. ๐Ÿ™
